The scene shows a father (wearing a linen smock often worn by working men over their smarter clothes to keep them from getting dirty) sitting in the doorway of his humble home, his young daughter reading at his side and his mother peeling potatoes by the fire. The painting is unsigned and has been fully re-lined. On re-lined canvas.
