About the Item
This rare circa 1925 Ex-Voto, “Holy Tribute for Saving a Brother,” is an original oil and ink on tin by an anonymous Mexican artist, presented in a contemporary hand-carved frame by artisan Michael Blatnik. The Ex-Voto measures 10 ¾ × 7 ¼ inches, with an outer framed dimension of 20 ¼ × 15 ¾ inches.
The painting commemorates a miraculous recovery: “I thank Jesus, the Holy one of Miracles, for answering my prayers that my brother Gilberto Hernandez will live after having a blood clot, and I hope that he continues to hear my prayers for his complete recovery.” This deeply personal narrative, paired with vivid folk-art imagery, reflects the long-standing Mexican tradition of Ex-Votos, devotional works created to honor divine intervention and fulfill sacred vows.
Historically, Ex-Votos were commissioned after surviving life-threatening events or personal calamities. Artists would illustrate the miracle along with a brief written account, and the completed works were displayed in churches as public testimonies of gratitude and faith. Over time, these small-scale, highly expressive works became treasured folk art, admired by collectors and artists—including Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo—who helped popularize them in the 20th century.
This compelling piece offers a remarkable glimpse into Mexican religious folk art, devotional painting, and cultural heritage, making it a significant addition for collectors of Latin American art, ex-votos, and historic ritual objects.
