Inside a 'tavern, some patrons are playing cards: the man seated to the left cheats, hiding a card in the collar of his lisa tunic, under the amused gaze of the 'innkeeper who arrives.
The figures come across as grotesque, almost caricatured; the colors are predominantly earthy, emphasizing the folk setting.
Restored and re-tinted (on the back restorer's label dated 1952), the painting is presented in an antique frame.
