About the Item

An elegantly dressed woman sits gazing out of a window with a book on her lap. A fine example of the type of contemplative genre scenes for which Birney was well-known. William Verplanck Birney was a 19th-century American painter who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the American Artists Club. The Cincinnati Art Museum holds examples of Birney's work in their collection. Signed Lower Center
