About the Item
Jan Van der Straet, known as Giovanni Stradano (Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605), Workshop of
The Adoration of the Magi
late 16th century - early 17th century
oil painting on canvas
Measurements: 72 x 60 cm. - with frame 86 x 74 cm.
The proposed painting depicts the scene of the Adoration of the Magi, a favorite theme in ancient painting which is based on a traditional iconography, where the three sumptuously dressed kings are portrayed in front of the figures of the Holy Family, placed on the left of the composition. The older one, kneeling in adoration of the Child while kissing his hand, has already placed the crown and sword at the feet of the Virgin, while the second and third await their moment to honor the sacred event, with their precious gifts still in hands.
The work, of excellent quality and mature pictorial execution, fits perfectly within the Tuscan mannerism, between the end of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, with direct evidence that can approach it in the modus pingendi of the Flemish Jan Van der Straet (Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605), Italianized in Giovanni Stradano, active mainly in Florence.
Flemish by origin, his artistic training took place in Antwerp, and then moved to Italy around 1550, first to Venice, and later to Florence, where he found employment with the Grand Duke Cosimo I in the circle of Giorgio Vasari. Valuable are some of his altarpieces for some Florentine churches and the numerous drawings that were used to create some engravings which then had a wide diffusion.
However, it is difficult to approach the production of our canvas with a specific hand, since there are evident mixtures between the Flemish art imported by the painter with the Italian one.
The painting is superbly decorative, of good executive quality and characterized by a design with vigorous lines, with a marked play of chiaroscuro.
The work is in good condition, the canvas is healthy, it has some touches scattered on the surface.
Like all our objects, the work is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law.
We take care and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers.

The Announcement to the Shepherds
Oil on oak panel
103 x 63 cm
in frame 107 x 67
Provenance: Vienna Palais Dorotheum Old master painting 10.12.2015 (lot 143)
This is a spectacular depiction of the theme of the annunciation to the shepherds, set in a nocturnal atmosphere dense with photos but refined, the episode of the birth of Jesus reported in the Gospel according to Luke (Lu 2:8-15), in which an angel announces the birth of Christ to a group of shepherds.
We see the scene just as described in the Gospel passage that sets the event at night where the shepherds, intent on watching over their flock, were startled by the sudden appearance of an angel of astonishing beauty who we see here radiating a powerful golden light, while at his side a multitude of other angels from the heavenly army sing praises to God.
After exhorting them not to be afraid, he informed them that a saviour, the Messiah, had been born in Bethlehem, whom they would find wrapped in swaddling clothes in a manger, cared for by the Virgin and St Joseph.
The annunciation to the shepherds was the most depicted night scene in Flemish painting from the 15th century...

(Work with expertise by Dr. Arabella Cifani)
In the pleasing work proposed, depicting a classical Nativity scene, the Madonna is immortalised in adoration as she gently holds the sheet on which the Child is lying, with a gesture of protection and pride that facilitates an atmosphere of intimate recollection, in addition to the presence of three cherubs at the top.
The stylistic analysis of the canvas can easily be traced back to a painter of the Genoese school and active during the 17th century, specifically with the devotional works from the workshop of Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627-1703), an absolute protagonist of Genoese Baroque culture.
Piola was the owner of the most important city painting workshop of the time, known as 'Casa Piola', where his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria also collaborated.
His production, which specialised in a type of highly decorative, profane and allegorical paintings, destined for the decoration of Genoese patrician palaces, also included a refined series of works of a religious nature.
In particular, the style of our beautiful breast painting...

Frans Franken III 16th Century Oil on Wood, Adoration of the Magi, Painting
By Frans Franken the Younger

Frans Franken III and aid, Adoration of the Magi
Good condition
The oil painting on wood, with a gold background, depicts an Adoration of the Magi. The Magi are dressed in sumptuous silk and brocade dresses; they wear precious hats and jewelery. The richness of their garments is in contrast with the humility of the Holy Family and of the other characters who, around curious, observe the scene. The hut is simple, made of wood and straw: above it shines the Comet, symbol of the divine event. In the distance, a group of wayfarers walk along a path that is lost on the horizon, blending into the gold of the bottom.
The representation proposes a traditional iconography, in which the painter inserts some details that he lends himself to symbolic interpretations. Among these is the appearance of the Magi, who from the XIVth century differs iconographically: the wise astronomers represent the homage to Jesus of the then known parts of the world, namely Africa, Asia and Europe. To the right of the Magi, in the foreground, sits a monkey, considered a demonic creature and a symbol of lies and sin. It is depicted on the sidelines, as a defeat, next to a fragment of a classical column: ruin alludes to the end of paganism, of the old world that collapses with the advent of the new one, marked by the birth of Christ and liberation from the Original Sin. On the ruins he climbs the ivy, symbol of the immortality of the soul. The work is attributable to the workshop of the Flemish painter Frans Francken III...
