About the Item
Mixed media on canvas 131 x 162.2 cm (51.6 x 63.9 in)
Kwon Ji-an’s Humming Letter #99 is a striking exploration of rhythm, emotion, and texture—an expressive continuation of her acclaimed Humming Letter series. This large-scale painting is an invitation to experience color and movement in a deeply immersive way, translating the ephemeral nature of sound into a rich, layered composition.
A captivating blend of deep blues, vibrant magentas, and bursts of yellow unfolds across the canvas, creating a dynamic interplay of color and form. Kwon’s intuitive technique—applying paint directly with her hands—gives the work a raw, organic energy, where every movement is visible, and every mark holds intention. The thick impasto layers enhance the dimensionality of the piece, making it shift and transform depending on the viewer’s perspective and the surrounding light.
On the left side, a delicate, handwritten inscription subtly integrates into the composition, reinforcing the connection between visual expression and auditory experience. This signature element is a hallmark of Kwon’s Humming Letterseries, further embedding the idea that her paintings are both seen and heard.
This work is part of a significant series that has established Kwon Ji-an as a unique voice in contemporary abstraction. Humming Letter #99 exemplifies her ability to bridge music, movement, and visual storytelling, making it a compelling acquisition for collectors who seek works that transcend traditional artistic boundaries.
The generous scale of this piece enhances its impact, making it an expressive focal point in any collection. The vibrant color palette and intricate layering ensure that the painting continuously offers new details to discover, evolving with each viewing.
This mixed-media painting is in pristine condition, professionally preserved to maintain the intensity of its pigments and the integrity of its textured surface. The sculptural quality of the paint adds depth, allowing the work to respond dynamically to different lighting environments. Its tactile richness invites close observation, revealing intricate variations in tone and form.
Kwon Ji-an’s Humming Letter series is deeply rooted in her artistic philosophy, where sound and painting exist as interconnected expressions of emotion. Her transition from music to fine art has shaped a distinctive approach that prioritizes sensory experience and gestural spontaneity. Since her first solo exhibition in 2012, Kwon has continuously evolved her practice, gaining recognition for her ability to transform intangible emotions into tangible compositions.
This piece offers collectors a unique opportunity to engage with Kwon Ji-an’s artistic evolution. Its expressive movement, layered textures, and bold palette make it a powerful addition to any collection, resonating with both visual and emotional depth.

Kwon Ji-an, professionally known as Solbi, is a multidisciplinary South Korean artist who has made a remarkable transition from the world of K-Pop to the contemporary art scene. After debuting in 2006 as a singer in the group Typhoon, she gradually shifted her focus toward the visual arts, culminating in her first solo exhibition in 2012, A Person’s Way of Looking at the World, in Seoul. Since then, she has developed a highly personal and expressive artistic language that fuses painting, performance, video, and sound. Her work is rooted in autobiographical experience and emotional introspection, often addressing the pressures of public life, the impact of cyberbullying, and the healing power of creativity. Through “self-collaboration”, she merges her background in music with visual art, creating dynamic compositions that incorporate sound waves and tactile gestures. Kwon frequently paints with her hands, producing richly textured surfaces full of movement and emotion, reminiscent of the expressive qualities found in the works of Renoir and Van Gogh.
Her paintings explore the boundaries between existence and nonexistence, chaos and harmony, material and immaterial. Her signature aesthetic is characterized by swirling color fields, bold gestures, and a strong sense of rhythm, reflecting her belief in the power of sensory experience. In 2015, she introduced her interdisciplinary project TRACE, marking a turning point in her practice and affirming her position as an “art-tainer", a unique cultural figure who bridges the gap between pop culture and
contemporary art. In recognition of her contributions, she received the Arttainer Division Award at the 2019 Korea First Brand Awards. Today, Kwon Ji-an stands as one of South Korea’s most original and influential voices in the arts, continuing to push boundaries through works that are not only seen but deeply felt.
“If my paintings can touch someone’s heart and be part of their healing process, that would be amazing.” – Kwon Ji-an
