"Mis-communication" by Joey Manlapaz is a striking cityscape that captures the vibrant yet solitary moments of urban life. This piece, painted in oil and mixed media on board, exemplifies contemporary realism with its meticulous attention to detail and evocative portrayal of everyday scenes. The painting draws you into a bustling street where subtle moments of disconnection unfold, telling a story of missed connections amidst the chaos of modern living.
The focal point of the painting is the front of a charming Italian restaurant, its warm yellow and red exterior contrasting with the cool blue tones of the sky above. Seated at an outdoor table, a man is engaged in a phone conversation, his expression a mix of concentration and frustration. His body language suggests he's engrossed in the call, possibly trying to resolve something urgent, yet his surroundings imply a sense of isolation despite the busy street around him.
Adding a whimsical touch to the scene is a vibrant orange retro car parked inside the restaurant, cleverly repurposed to serve pizza. This playful element injects a sense of nostalgia and creativity, contrasting with the modern-day disconnection portrayed by the man on the phone.
As the man talks, a lady passes by on the street, completely absorbed in her phone, oblivious to everything around her, including the man nearby. This interaction—or lack thereof—highlights the theme of miscommunication, illustrating how technology often distracts us from the present moment and the people physically around us.
The harmonious blend of blue, yellow, and red ties the composition together, creating a visually engaging narrative. The artwork, signed by the artist, is ready to be displayed and is currently available for purchase at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea, as well as online.
Artist biography:
Joey P. Mánlapaz (MFA, George Washington University) is a contemporary realist painter, avid educator, compassionate art provider for the older community, noted curator and juror all rolled into one. She lives and works in Washington, DC, the main subject of her canvases, which are widely recognized and collected, most notably by the nation’s capital that owns 43 paintings and prints. The artist is recipient of commissions, grants, and fellowships in support of her work. The U.S. Library of Congress and First Lady Laura Bush commissioned the artist for the coveted 2003 National Book Festival. Her paintings have been shown at nationwide galleries and museums. Her papers, correspondence and sketchbooks are in the collection of the U.S. Library of Congress Asian American and Pacific Islander Division. A replica of her painting is installed permanently at the Bethesda Metro Tunnel in Maryland. Mánlapaz’s ongoing fascination for and concentration on the city of Washington as subject matter was influenced by the late painter Frank Wright, her mentor renowned for his depictions of 18th-19th century architecture of downtown DC. In her realist renditions, she examines the relationship between the factual photorealism of Richard Estes and the deep psychological sensibility of Edward Hopper, and attempts to bridge the two concepts to achieve a painterly style with a generous dose of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful thrill. The artist is Associate Faculty at the Corcoran School of Art
Design at George Washington University and lecturer at The Art League (VA).
