Vintage Post Impressionist framed oil painting on stretched canvas, signed in the bottom right, Abel Villard (1871-1969). A stunning, calm and moody depiction of a village boardering water, most likely to be in the Brittany area of France where this artist lived and worked. A village, scattered along the coast, painted in delicated colours under a large sky with lilac hues. The village is textured giving depth, and reflected in the cool, almost grey waters.

Condition: The painting is in good vintage condition, expect very minor imperfections. The frame is also vintage and you should again expect imperfections associated with age throughout.
Signed: Abel Villard (1871-1969) born in Ploaré and died in Quimper, Abel was a French painter and industrialist. He was the founder of the Villard jam factory on Rue de la Providence in Quimper.
Like his father Jean-Marie Villard, Abel Villard taught drawing. A friend and student of Louis-Marie Désiré-Lucas, they worked on sketches and traveled around the Douarnenez area, painting certain landscapes together.
In 1910, he had the Roz Maria villa built on a hillside in the Locmaria district of Quimper. Inspired by neoclassical architecture, this manor house or château features Napoleon III-style interior decoration and a vast English-style garden with rocaille features.
In Quimper, he founded free municipal art classes and created the Union Artistique, then, in 1946, the Quimper School of Fine Arts, which was directed by Robert Villard from 1946 to 1968 (a painter of the same name, born in Paris in 1897 and died in Vannes in 1977). He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1967 and an Officer of Public Instruction in recognition of his cultural achievements.
Eclectic and enterprising, he founded the Société des Confiturerie Villard in 1924 in Quimper, a company he ran until 1950.
He was the brother of the writer René Villard. His son, the painter Robert Paulo Villard (1903-1975), was the master craftsman behind the decoration of the Douarnenez village hall, on which Abel Villard collaborated in 1938. Abel was awarded a silver medal at the 1954 Salon des Artistes Français and a gold medal at the 1968 Salon.
A street in Quimper is named after him. A bust of Abel Villard, artist unknown, is kept at the Quimper Regional School of Fine Arts. You can find his work in the Musee des Beaux Arts de Quimper.
