About the Item

Adolphus Knell (British, circa 1870) Coastal Vessels in Choppy Seas Oil on board, presented in its original gilt frame Signed lower right This atmospheric marine study by Adolphus Knell captures the restless character of the open sea with the quiet authority and refined craftsmanship that define the artist’s best work. Painted circa 1870, the scene unfolds beneath a sky laden with drifting vapours of pale gold, soft mauves, and greys—those shifting tones that Knell handled with such lyrical sensitivity. Across the middle distance, a small coastal craft leans into the wind, its brown sail taut and its crew working steadily as the waves rise beneath the hull. Beyond, the ghostly silhouette of a square-rigged ship moves with stately calm, lending the composition a sense of depth, narrative, and maritime purpose. The water is beautifully worked, its green-grey surface flecked with white as the wind stirs up short, brisk waves. Small sea birds trace the air above the swell, further animating the scene while reinforcing the realism and immediacy of the moment. Knell’s brushwork is confident yet restrained, evoking movement without theatrics and balancing the romantic appeal of seafaring life with careful observation. The painting is housed in a handsome period gilt frame with beaded inner moulding, its warm gilding setting off the cool marine palette to fine effect. The frame’s traditional profile complements the work and enhances its presence, making it an elegant and complete example of late 19th-century British marine painting. A beautifully atmospheric and finely composed seascape—full of quiet drama, honest craftsmanship, and the enduring charm that collectors of Knell continue to prize. Framed in a new Hand made English frame.

19th century English marine seascape, with fishing boats in the North Sea
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third-place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
