Albert Bredow is a German-Russian landscape painter, lithographer and scenographer. Born in Germany, he worked as a scenographer in Riga from 1852, then in Tallinn. In 1856, he moved to Moscow at the invitation of the manager of the Imperial Theatre. From 1856 to 1862, he worked as a scenographer for the Moscow theatres. And Bredow worked at the St. Petersburg Theatre from 1862 to 1871. In 1863, an album with his scenery for Glinka's opera "A Life for the Tsar" was published in St. Petersburg. And in 1868, he entered the Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg. At the same time, he painted smaller animated painting, landscapes with beautiful lights which he regularly exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts. Bredow is mentioned in Krasovskaya's "Dictionary of Russian Ballet Theatre from its Origins to the Mid-19th Century" (Moscow, 1958). His scenery designs are present in the collections of the Bachrushin Theatre Museum in Moscow.

Beautiful 19th-century carved and gilded wood frame
Adalbert Waagen was a German landscape painter. He painted primarily landscapes, and more specifically mountain landscapes. His style was influenced by his teacher, Zimmermann, through Joseph Anton Koch. Leopold, Prince Regent of Bavaria, bestowed upon him the honorary title of Royal Professor in 1891. His works are held in the Martin von Wagner Museum, the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, and the Munich City Museum.
Waagen first studied with Albert Zimmermann in Munich between 1855 and 1858. Our painting, dated "1857," dates from this period.
After completing his studies in 1860, Waagen established his studio in Munich, in the home of his friend Karl Millner.
He regularly undertook study trips with Hermann Krüger and other students to the mountains of Old Bavaria and Tyrol. Our painting, in fact, is set in southern Bavaria, "near Lake Tergen."
Waagen's style became broader and more realistic at this time, both in its atmosphere and its use of color. Waagen became a central figure in the vibrant artistic circle of "Young Munich," alongside Otto Stöger, Theodor Pixis, Georg Kremplsetzer, August Spieß, Friedrich and Heinrich Lossow...

Very nice 19th century gilded wooden frame
French painter, lithographer and illustrator, Théophile Clément Blanchard is part of of those painters of the romantic era who represented picturesque views of France like Alexis Daligé de Fontenay or Eugène Cicéri. These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old ! We still know of him, in particular, a view of Bugey (dated 1846) which is at the Louvre Museum and a “Delicious Landscape” (from the 1840s) at the Salies museum at Bagnères de Bigorre...
