Annotated “A. Bergier - Avignon” on the back
5.5 × 8.7 inches
Born in Avignon in 1881, Alfred Bergier was a painter from the Provençal school. He took part in the first exhibition of the Groupe des Treize, founded in 1912 by Clément Brun (1865-1920), which brought together thirteen painters from Avignon on the fringes of the Société Vauclusienne des Amis des Arts. It was later reorganized and chaired by Alfred Bergier in the 1940s, by then a renowned watercolorist.
In 1913, the artist exhibited his acclaimed landscapes at the Salon des Artistes Français, in which he regularly participated. In 1928 and again in 1930, the Georges Petit gallery presented several of his works. He also exhibited at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts and the Salon des Indépendants.
The landscapes of his native region were his favorite subjects. He captured their myriad facets, from cypress trees and oleanders to fields bathed in light, “treated with striking clarity of vision and relief.” His paintings thus recall Virgil's words in Hades: “Who will give me back the beautiful light of day?”
Alfred Bergier was the artistic director of the regional magazine Soleil de France - pour que les français gardent le soleil au cœur (Sun of France - so that the French keep the sun in their hearts), the organ of the Académie des poètes du soleil (Academy of Sun Poets), founded in 1942. He also produced illustrations for various works, notably for Georges Delaquys' collection of poems Les Confidences lyriques, published by Éditions du Trésor d'art provençal (1942).
