About the Item

Oil on canvas 130.5 x 97 cm Signed and dated lower right: A Marinier 1889 Alfred Hippolyte Marinier was born in Orsay in 1833. A student of Jules Noël and Henri Marie Beyle, he exhibited at the Salon from 1879 to 1881. Then he left Paris to settle in Brittany in Saint Cast le Guildo in 1885. In love with this region, he surveyed the towns and villages, the coast and the hinterland on many excursions. He published a guide to the bay of Saint-Malo in 1886. This environment is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his paintings. Here, the ruins of a church or an abbey could be those of Beauport or Boquen nearby. Nothing remains of the roof and a luxuriant vegetation has invaded the place. On a section of wall, next to a window and a door, appears a niche with an ogival arch that shelters the tomb of a knight. This very frontal composition plays on the contrast between the mineral part, marked by the ravages of time, evocation of decay and death, and in counterpoint the vegetal universe, teeming with insects, incarnation of life and renewal. This duality is again found between these medieval ruins falling into oblivion and their rediscovery by an adventurous spectator. As the century draws to a close and many artistic movements emerge, our painting seems a belated ode to the values and language of Romanticism.
