About the Item
Mid-Century California Coastal Landscape with Cypress
Vibrant landscape depicting two cypress trees along a rocky coastline by Alfred Wands (American b. 1904 d. 1998.) Purple and yellow flowers dot the grass surrounding the trees. The water is a vibrant blue color with green accents. There are large rocks near the shore, creating areas of white sea spray as the waves hit them. The sky contains a variety of blues and subtle purple tones, with areas of green tones in the clouds. Thick brushstrokes throughout the piece add a sense of textural interest and help to define the different areas of the landscape.
Signed in bottom right corner: "Alfred Wands"
Small pencil annotation on verso appears to read "60," potentially giving the creation date.
Frame size: 28" H x 32.88" W
Canvas size: 25.07" H x 30" W
Alfred Wands was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1904. He spent his youth in Cleveland, ultimately attending the Cleveland Art Institute and graduating with honors. Following his graduation, he spent six months in Paris, studying at the Academie Julian and later in Brussels, Munich, and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Wands began teaching at the Cleveland Art Institute and Cleveland Museum of Art, finding artistic success through venues such as the Carnegie Institute’s International Art Exhibits. After living in Cleveland for three years following his European study, Wands relocated to Denver, becoming the head of the art department at Colorado Women’s College. In 1930, Wands connected with the art community in Toas, New Mexico and proceeded to spend many summers painting there. After teaching for 17 years, Wands decided to begin painting full time. During the 1950s he began spending the winters painting in Mexico and along the California Coast, particularly in the Caramel area. He opened a studio and gallery in Estes Park, Colorado in 1955. He continued to paint and exhibit his works until his death in 1998.
During his life, Wands was a member of many different art organizations. He served as the president of the Denver Artists Guild for three years and he was a chairman for the Denver Art Commission for 16 years, in addition to being a member of the Cleveland Society of Artists, Ohio Watercolor Society, Chicago Galleries Association, and the Caramel Art Association. Wands exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland School of Art, Denver Art Museum, Denver Artist's Guild, Western Arts Association, Carmel Art Association, Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, Chicago Art Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, and the Sangre De Cristo Art Center. His works are now held in the permanent collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Palace of Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Kansas City Art Institute, Museum of Arts and Sciences in Brooklyn, New York, Colorado Springs Art Center, Western Reserve University, Denver University, Denver Public Schools, Sangre De Cristo Art Center, and University of Southern Colorado.
