Swiss Alps Landscape - Original Oil on Canvas
Original oil landscape by Alphons Muller (Swiss, 1898-1955) depicting the Swiss Alps. Dark green trees emerge on either side, with a small cottage on a hillside to the right. Quiet waters are depicted with light, wispy clouds hovering above the snow crested mountains.
The use of the palette knife imbues an impasto texture adding another layer of interest and depth to the scene. In his travels in the late nineteen-thirties his work matured stylistically with thick layered expressive images.

Alphons Müller lived and worked in the watch industries in Biel/Bienne in Switzerland up to about 1933. He then decided to become a full time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955.
Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pub and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching impasto images - especially during the war.
In the late thirties he meet his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist Christian Kipfer who pre-financed and collected Müller's work. From that point in time on Müller's output increased considerably , he was able to travel and his work matured stylistically with thick layered expressive images.
