About the Item
Blue Grez IV is a small yet striking painting by Swedish artist Anders Ståhl, depicting the village of Grez-sur-Loing—a village just outside Paris that has long been a source of inspiration for generations of artists. While the motif was first sketched on-site, this finished work was completed in the artist’s studio in Sweden, allowing for a more reflective interpretation of the fleeting evening light.
Anders Ståhl (b. 1966) is one of Scandinavia’s most dedicated contemporary painters in the tradition of Plein Air, a practice that he has cultivated for over four decades. Though this particular piece was not painted outdoors, it is grounded in that same spirit of close observation and emotional resonance with the landscape. His palette—dominated by deep blues and soft light—captures the atmosphere of dusk with poetic sensitivity.
Ståhl draws inspiration from the French Impressionists and Nordic masters such as Zorn and Nordström, as well as virtuosos like Sorolla and Sargent. His artistic process often begins in the field, where he gathers impressions and visual notes, later revisiting them in the studio to explore larger or more contemplative formats.
Recipient of scholarships from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee and the San Michele Foundation in Capri, Italy, Ståhl has exhibited widely, including at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis in 2006.

Dick Beer (1893-1938)
Dick Beer was born in London in 1893. His father, John Beer (1853-1906), was a Swedish painter from Stockholm who had a career mainly as a watercolour painter with motifs of horses from racetracks and fox hunts from the countryside.
Barely fifteen years old, Dick Beer became an orphan and came to Sweden in 1907. Already in 1908-1909, he started at Althin's painting school in Stockholm. And later, at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1910-1912. His teachers were, among others, Gustaf Cederström, Oscar Björk and Alfred Bergström...
