About the Item

Title: Mid-20th Century French Pastel Landscape of Trees in a Sunlit Public Garden by Anne Marie Migette Perard (French 1902-1977) Medium: Pastel on unframed paper Size: 15.25 inches (height) x 20.5 inches (width) Condition: As is normal with unframed works on paper there are some minor old creases or paper edge curls/ tears - all of which should be covered over or smoothed out once framed; generally very good and sound. Provenance: as with all the works we have by this artist, it has come from the artists estate in France. Description: This luminous mid-century pastel landscape by Anne Marie Migette Perard captures the tranquil beauty of a sun-drenched public garden filled with lush, mature trees. Painted in the Post-Impressionist tradition, the scene evokes the vibrancy of early summer, with light filtering through dense foliage in every shade of green, from olive and chartreuse to emerald and jade. In the foreground, a tall, elegant tree stretches upward, while in the background, a single dark figure strolls among the trees, giving scale and a gentle sense of narrative to the composition. Perard’s masterful use of pastel—seen in her varied mark-making, layered colour blending, and atmospheric composition—conveys a joyful immersion in nature. Her lively brushwork and choice of bold tones bring this peaceful moment to life, creating an ideal piece for collectors seeking vintage European landscapes, plein-air-inspired artworks, or scenes that reflect the serenity of rural and urban parklands across France. This work is particularly well-suited for interiors that celebrate organic forms and natural light, and would appeal to buyers interested in soft, impressionistic interpretations of nature with a distinctly French charm.

She is both a registered nurse, and accomplished artist, residing in Milwaukee, WI. From the artist: “These paintings are my prayers,” muses Leonard, reflecting on her driving need to express herself through her art. “We are made of the stuff that requires us to respond with our hearts and hands. Often, it requires terrible sacrifice and suffering, something not everyone can understand. But it is done with reverence of life, not irreverence.” Leonard’s pastels and oil paintings capture her reverence of life and reflect her own life’s journey, including earlier forays into the wilderness. Her venture into art began in early childhood, as childless neighbors nurtured her natural ability to draw; concurrently, Leonard’s parents instilled a respect for academic excellence and the higher order of nurturing others. As a young nurse, Leonard “heard and saw poignant messages to travel while one was young and free…while one had one’s health.” Consequently, she took to the open road and public lands, camping across America for months at a time. During these years, her “celebration of the natural splendor of this country” helped shape her sense of artistic expression. She was moved by such sights as the sunset on St. Mary’s Lake...
