About the Item

This beautiful "Early summer evening with blossoming trees in a garden" at Stubbsund painted by the landscape painter Anselm Schultzberg (1862-1945), signed and dated 1922-34, is a very fine example of the artists oeuvre or work. The motif with the blossoming trees in the evening is from the garden of the manor house Stubbsund built in 1771. The evenings in the early summer in Sweden are very bright and the sun does not go down until around 10pm. Stubbsund is a culturally historically interesting building in Saltsjö-Duvnäs in Nacka municipality not far from Stockholm. Schultzberg was to become a very popular and successful painter and was to play an important role of promoting Swedish art in the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. Already at the age of 14 Schultzberg made ambitious studies in oil painting. One of his first teachers was the painter Gustav Wilhelm Palm (1810-1890). Schultzberg studied in Stockholm at the Technical School under the wings of Edvard Perséus in 1881. Perséus was a Swedish painter and superintendent at the Royal Court of Sweden. Schultzberg was then accepted at the Royal Academy of Arts and studied there between 1882–1886. After a study trip to Amsterdam, with Rembrandt's art as his main goal, he spent the summer of 1883 studying painting in Grangärde situated in the Dalarna mountain range, whose mighty nature was for decades one of his main sources of inspiration. Schultzberg was primarily a painter with oil as the main means of expression and the landscape as his main motif. Where human figures appear, they are more to be regarded as staffage. Schultzberg won early recognition both with audiences and critics. At the academy's student exhibition in 1885, he showed, among other things, "Children in the Garden", a spring idyll from Nyckelviken. This skilfully executed painting made him eligible for the Royal medal, which, however, was made impossible by the fact that he was still in the lower division of the academy. When he was moved up to the higher department the following year, he received a medal for the large laid-out "Forest Path in autumn mood", a tribute to Södertörn's nature. The fine-tuned coloring, the attention to detail and the clear, modeling light have been compared to what the Frenchman J Bastien-Lepage and Danish Golden Age painting can exhibit. Schultzberg had his first international success in 1888 when "Sunny Winter Day", exhibited at the great Nordic exhibition in Copenhagen was purchased by the Statens museum for Kunst (National museum of Denmark). A similar painting, "Winter morning after snowfall in Dalarna" (1893), was acquired by The National Museum of Sweden. In 1889, he went to France. After a short stay in Paris, where the forest of Fontainebleau in the autumn sun became his first motif on French soil, he settled in Grez-sur-Loing. In 1890-91, he lived in Etaples, a small coastal town in northern France. A study visit to London, where Schultzberg studied W. Turner's paintings with great admiration, which is also reflected in his French motifs. He won success in Paris when his "Matin d'hiver", with an atmospheric tombstone, and won a medal at the Salon. In 1891 he visited Italy but found it less artistically inspiring than France. He stayed at a number of places and visited amongst others Sorrento and Capri. In 1893 he won a medal in Chicago. After his return to Sweden, he then for most of his life divided his life with a combined home and studio in Stockholm and an inspiring country place. In 1916 he had an artist's villa with a studio built for him outside Filipstad. The forests of Värmland inspired him and there he found a new audience. He became a member of the Academy of Arts in 1900. Schultzberg realized early on the importance of participating in international exhibitions and neglected no opportunity to show the foreign audience his art. Much of his production between the turn of the century and the 1920s thus came to stay abroad. As commissioner of the Swedish art department at the World Exhibition in St. Louis, USA, in 1904, Schultzberg won an international reputation as a skilled organizer and went on to become the most self-styled ambassador for Swedish art abroad. Between 1906-07 he was an art commissioner in Budapest and in 1911 he was assigned the position of trustee as Sweden's general commissioner at the international jubilee exhibition in Rome. The exhibition was a great success, and Schultzberg contributed, among other things, to Carl Larsson's self-portrait being acquired by The Uffizi Gallery Museum. Also, at the World Exhibition in San Francisco in 1915, Schultzberg was responsible for the Swedish art department. Later, also commissioner for the art exhibition at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932, and in 1934 he was elected chairman of the Artists' Club. Schultzberg had his first major solo exhibition in 1937, at Liljevalchs in Sthlm. The exhibition was a public and critical success; an almost unanimous press praised his life's work in initiated and positive articles. Schultzberg is represented in many museums, amongst them are The Swedish National Museum, The Gothenburg Art Museum, Kalmar Art Museum, National museum of Denmark and others.
