Description: This captivating watercolour painting showcases a rugged Scottish landscape, featuring the imposing mountain Suilven, viewed from the Kylestrone Road. Suilven’s unique shape dominates the composition, with its steep slopes and craggy outline, capturing the mountain's distinct, almost fortress-like appearance that makes it one of the iconic peaks in the Scottish Highlands.
In the foreground, a simple stone bridge arches gracefully over a small, rushing stream, creating a sense of movement and grounding the scene within the lush, earthy hues of the valley. The artist has masterfully rendered the texture and color of the rugged terrain with washes of brown, green, and ochre tones, which contrast with the cooler shades of the mountain. The stream’s path weaves through rocks and grasses, leading the viewer’s eye toward the imposing mountain in the background.
Above, the sky is rendered in a soft, dappled wash of blue and white, hinting at a calm yet slightly overcast day, which enhances the rugged beauty and tranquility of the scene. This choice of palette gives the piece a serene, yet untamed atmosphere, reminiscent of the wilderness of the Scottish Highlands. The artist’s subtle attention to detail and control of watercolor techniques bring out the natural beauty of the scene, while also emphasizing the grandeur of the mountain and the unspoiled landscape that surrounds it.

Frank Egginton was a British contemporary landscape artist, synonymous with watercolours of the Irish countryside, particularly county Donegal. His daughter and son in law have run The Gallery in Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal for many years.
Frank (officially Francis John) Egginton was born in Wallasey in the county of Cheshire on 10 November 1908. When he was a baby the family moved to Newton Abbott in Devon, as his father had been appointed headmaster of the College of Art there.
Frank was educated at Newton College, and then Newton Abbott College of Art, and Exeter School of Art. He then spent some time perfecting his drawing whilst working in an architect’s office. In 1921 the family moved again to Teignmouth in Devon.
In 1930 Egginton visited Co. Donegal and painted some pictures for a businessman friend of his father’s. He developed a love of the west Irish...
