Description: A vibrant and beautifully composed 1982 watercolour by Tony Herbert, capturing the layered hills, whitewashed cottages and boats of Newton Ferrers, a picturesque village on the south coast of Devon, near Noss Mayo and the River Yealm. Known for its wooded valley setting and tidal estuary, Newton Ferrers is a classic subject for coastal painters — and this work demonstrates Herbert’s masterful sensitivity to light, rhythm and form.
In the foreground, boats rest at low tide, their reflections mingling with the muddy pink and grey shore. Further back, tightly packed cottages climb the hillside in soft shades of cream, blue and grey, their forms partially obscured by layers of rich green foliage. The background is dominated by a gently sloping wooded hill, rendered in muted tones that draw the eye toward the centre of the village.
