Description: Painted in early September 2006, this vibrant plein air scene captures the life and energy of a riverside jetty, where figures are gathered along a narrow landing with boats, fishing posts, and simple waterside structures. The composition is animated by a group of seated and standing figures, loosely rendered in a few confident strokes, which bring a sense of immediacy and lived experience.
A cool light floods the landscape, softening the tones of grass, water, and wood. In the background, weathered huts and distant banks hint at a rural or semi-industrial location — likely somewhere along the East Anglian coast, a region Herbert frequently visited.
