Description: This atmospheric watercolour captures a serene moment along the edge of the Venetian lagoon, where a lone figure walks beside the water, casting a soft reflection on the rain-dampened stone. In the background, the domes and towers of Venice rise gently against a muted sky, silhouetted in tones of soft terracotta and grey. A classic Venetian vaporetto (water bus) passes in the middle distance, painted in cheerful yellow and white, anchoring the composition with a sense of movement and daily life.
The striking black lampposts—each topped with glowing red glass—are a hallmark of Venice, their elegant curves and upright stature giving structure to the wide, open foreground. The viewer’s eye is led along the pavement, past the figure in yellow and blue, and into the distant cityscape beyond. Despite the overcast tones and quiet atmosphere, the piece is alive with subtle colour play: warm siennas in the stone pillar at right, cool greens and blues in the water, and flecks of golden yellow reflected across the surface.
