Description: This vibrant coastal watercolour by Tony Herbert captures the well-known fishing beach of Beer, a historic seaside village in East Devon nestled along the Jurassic Coastline. The composition features a classic lineup of painted fishing boats — red, white and green hulls gleaming against the shingle beach — with a couple of figures going about their work.
Beer is famed for its working beach, where boats are pulled ashore by hand and nets are dried beside chalk cliffs. In this piece, Herbert chooses to focus on the relationship between the natural and the human — the boats resting at diagonals, a figure mid-stride, and the deep green of cliffside foliage forming a strong visual backdrop.
The loose brushwork and confident palette give the scene energy and warmth, while the sandy foreground and gentle sky suggest a hazy summer’s day. Though undated, the reverse is titled “Beer”, firmly situating the location within the East Devon coast between Seaton and Branscombe.
Tony Herbert (1927–2024) devoted much of his later career to capturing the villages and harbours of southern England. His ability to capture everyday coastal life in fluid watercolour marks this as a quintessential example of his work.
