Description: This atmospheric watercolour landscape by British artist Tony Herbert captures the sunlit stillness of a country road in North Wales in 1976. A single-lane road cuts through golden meadows and green hedgerows, flanked by gently rising hills and telephone poles that draw the eye toward a horizon of distant mountains. The sky is left near-blank, emphasising the open air and quiet heat of a summer's day. Painted with Herbert’s trademark looseness and tonal sensitivity, this piece evokes the sense of being alone with the land — a recurring theme in the artist’s rural studies.
Though unsigned, the painting is inscribed “N. Wales 76” on the reverse, and painted on a sheet of Oram
Robinson Ltd. board, consistent with other works from Herbert’s personal archive. It’s a fine example of the artist’s lifelong affection for British countryside scenery, especially the more rugged and lesser-travelled areas of Wales.
Paintings of North Wales remain highly sought after by collectors of British landscapes, particularly those that capture the changing rural infrastructure of the 20th century — here seen in the blacktop road weaving its way through untouched land.
