Work Description
White Rocks, Cape of Creus is a vibrant interpretation of the rugged and radiant landscape at the easternmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula. With loose, impasto brushwork, Antonio Sala Herrero captures the sculptural strength of the Cape of Creus rock formations bathed in Mediterranean light. The composition is built through successive layers of color, highlighting ochres, greens, and lilacs in a pictorial choreography that balances topographic accuracy with poetic exaltation.
The painting belongs to the tradition of Catalan Mediterranean landscape, clearly aiming to celebrate nature through a vibrant palette and consolidated technical mastery. The direct, dense brushstroke loaded with pigment reflects the artist’s full artistic maturity during the 1970s.
About the Artist: Antonio Sala Herrero
Antonio Sala Herrero (Barcelona, 1926 – 2012) was a self-taught painter specializing in landscapes and urban scenes of Catalonia. Passionate about art from an early age, he held his first solo exhibition in 1967 at the Municipal Hall of Figueres. His works were regularly exhibited in Catalan galleries such as La Pinacoteca in Barcelona, Galerías Nonell in Castellón, and Galería Rovira in Sabadell.
Sala Herrero was known for capturing the luminous atmosphere of the Mediterranean. He used expressive brushstrokes and vivid colors to depict intense landscapes from places like Cadaqués, Palamós, and Llafranc. He also painted still lifes and urban themes.
Among the awards he received are the Villa de Palamós Prize in 1969 and a distinction from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
