About the Item
This original watercolor, Zuni Cliffs, by American artist Art Hazelwood depicts the layered sandstone formations and expansive high-desert terrain of western New Mexico. Painted from a region where the artist spends part of each year, the work reflects Hazelwood’s direct engagement with the Southwestern landscape and its distinctive geology.
Soft washes of ochre, rust, sage green, and pale blue convey the sculptural presence of the cliffs while preserving the immediacy and transparency characteristic of watercolor. Hazelwood’s confident yet restrained brushwork captures both the solidity of the rock formations and the shifting light of the desert environment.
Known primarily for his work as a printmaker, Hazelwood brings a strong compositional sensibility to his watercolors, balancing structure with atmospheric nuance. Zuni Cliffs offers a quiet, contemplative view of the Southwest, rooted in observation and place.

Art Hazelwood
STATEMENT Artist books are an extension of my work in printmaking. I started thirty-five years ago with the simple idea of putting woodcut prints together in a sequential order. Since then I’ve worked with different forms of books, large scale accordion books, complex stage books, flip books etc. However, printmaking is still the center of any project. I’m involved in many projects that have nothing to do with books, but suddenly an idea will seem to require a book form. Some of the ideas that have inspired books are unexpected; a chance hearing of an opera aria about the underworld, the curious thought of how a theater work about the Thirty Years War could be reconstructed from engravings – and then how that might translate to the Afghan War. Suddenly an idea calls out for a book form to make it complete. BIOGRAPHY For over 25 years Art Hazelwood has created politically charged prints, working with dozens of organizations from arts organizations to unions to grassroots movements. Over that period he has been consistently involved with homeless rights, including working with the Western Regional Advocacy Project, where he is the Minister of Culture. In 2017, he received the Artwork as Revolution Award from the Coalition on Homelessness. He taught at the San Francisco Art Institute where he was involved in union bargaining for adjunct faculty and was elected Shop Steward. Also at the Art Institute he was part of the founding of the San Francisco Poster Syndicate, which has brought together political poster makers from various levels of experience and backgrounds to create art for activist organizations. His artwork is in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many other institutions. In 2021 UC Santa Cruz Special Collections established an archive of approximately 300 of his political prints. He is the author of the forthcoming book Mission Gráfica: Reflecting a Community in Print, as well as Hobos to Street People: Artists’ Responses to Homelessness from the New Deal to the Present.

Landscape Near Cundiyo, NM
, by Webb Young, Watercolor Painting on Paper
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 20.25" x 27.25" watercolor painting captures a winter landscape near Cundiyo, New Mexico, rendered in a naturalistic style. The foreground is populated with dark green shrubs, their colors providing a stark contrast against the white snow. These elements add a sense of depth and dimension to the scene, drawing the viewer’s eye into the painting. Starting in the foreground and continuing into the distance, is a partially visible dirt trail, blanketed with snow. The mid-ground features rolling hills blanketed in snow and dark foliage. In the background, distant mountains rise against the sky, their peaks slightly obscured by mist or clouds. This not only adds a sense of scale to the scene but also creates an atmospheric effect. The sky, painted in light blue hues, suggests a calm, clear day. The overall tranquil color palette balances the more detailed and textured elements of the composition. The painting is encased in a light brown, wooden frame, with a thin white inner boarder, complimenting the natural theme of the artwork.
Webb Young (1913-2005) was a renowned artist known for his depictions of New Mexico landscapes, architecture, and people. Young was born in Covington, Kentucky on September 2, 1913, and his interest in painting began at age 11 with art classes at the Chicago Art Institute. From 1925 through 1928, he studied painting in New Mexico under the famous Southwestern painter, Gerald Cassidy...
