About the Item

Arthur Armstrong R.H.A. 1924-1996, was an Irish landscape, still life and abstract painter. Studied at the Belfast College of Art, travelled to England, France and Spain all influenced his style thereafter. He painted in the West of Ireland which apparently was his best works. This painting which is catalogued as 'Circle of ' is certainly his manner of subject, pallet and brushwork, hence the attribution. There is evidence of a signature but it is illegible. Armstrong's work is very collectable within the Irish community and this picture being oil on canvas is quite rare and therefore falls within his remit of collectable landscapes. The picture was found as canvas laid on board which was a later construction and it was strip lined to bring it back to it's original state, as oil on canvas. The picture is unframed, however this may change, also I have included a before conservation photo. I have included an alternative biography of Armstrong for your interest. Arthur Armstrong (1924–1996) was a Northern Irish modernist painter known for his Cubist-inspired landscapes, still life, and collages. A highly respected member of the Irish art community, his work is found in numerous public and private collections. Early life and education Birth and family: Arthur Charlton Armstrong was born on January 12, 1924, in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. His father was a house painter, and Armstrong was said to be an enthusiastic sketcher from a young age. Artistic turn: Although he initially pursued a university education, studying first political science and then architecture at Queen's University Belfast, he soon changed his focus. He left his formal studies to attend night classes at the Belfast College of Art. Belfast circle: During his time in Belfast in the post-war period, Armstrong became acquainted with a vibrant circle of artists, including Gerard Dillon, George Campbell, and Daniel O'Neill. Career and style Early work: Armstrong's early paintings often focused on city scenes and portraits, exploring the atmosphere of wartime and post-war Belfast. His work quickly found recognition, with his first exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in Dublin in 1950. Abstract shift: From the 1950s onward, Armstrong's style evolved towards abstraction, influenced by Cubism and the School of Paris. This led to a focus on the abstract qualities of a scene, using strong shapes and interlocking areas of color to create his compositions. Textural elements: Particularly in his landscapes of the 1960s, Armstrong was known for building up his oil paintings with plaster to create monumental, textured surfaces. He saw landscape elements like rocks and sea as patterns of interlocking textures. Collages: In the 1960s and 70s, Armstrong also became known for his innovative collages, which showed his deep interest in the European avant-garde. He used torn paper and other materials to create dynamic, abstracted scenes. Prominent associations: Armstrong exhibited widely throughout his career in Ireland, Spain, England, and the United States, with over 70 solo shows. He was also a founding member of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Life in London and Dublin Time in London: From 1956 to 1961, Armstrong lived and worked in London. He also frequently traveled to Spain, a country that would inspire him for decades. Settling in Dublin: In 1962, he settled in Dublin, where he began exhibiting regularly at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA). For many years, he shared a home with his close friend and fellow artist Gerard Dillon in the Ranelagh area. Theatre design: With Dillon and Campbell, Armstrong collaborated on designing the stage sets for a 1969 Abbey Theatre production of Seán O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. Awards and recognition Royal Hibernian Academy: Armstrong was elected an associate member of the RHA in 1969 and a full member in 1972. Douglas Hyde Gold Medal: He received this award at the Oireachtas Exhibition in 1968. Aosdána: In 1981, he became a member of Aosdána, an affiliation of Irish artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the arts. Retrospective: In 1981, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland held a major retrospective exhibition of his work. Later life and legacy Personal loss: The deaths of his close friends Gerard Dillon (1971), Daniel O'Neill (1974), and George Campbell (1979) greatly affected Armstrong, and the catalogue for his 1981 retrospective describes him as an independent and individual artist. Death: A lifelong bachelor, Arthur Armstrong died in Dublin on January 13, 1996. Legacy: Despite sometimes being overshadowed by his more famous friends, Armstrong is regarded as one of the most significant and innovative Irish painters of his era. His abstracted landscapes and influential collages left an enduring mark on Irish modern art.
