About the Item

Arthur Croft Mitchell (British, fl. early 20th century) Raguse (Ragusa / Dubrovnik), Croatia Oil on canvas, circa 1910 Signed and titled Raguse on the reverse Presented in the original period gilt frame A highly evocative early 20th-century view of the historic harbour at Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik), painted by the British artist Arthur Croft Mitchell during the final years of the Austro-Hungarian period, when the city retained its old name in travel literature and artistic circles. The composition captures the enclosed inner harbour, with lateen-rigged fishing vessels moored against the pale limestone quays, their masts and sails cutting vertically through the shimmering Adriatic light. Beyond, the fortified walls and clustered buildings rise in softly modulated tones, crowned by a domed Baroque church that anchors the skyline and firmly identifies the location. Mitchell’s handling is confident and atmospheric, combining structured draughtsmanship with a gently impressionistic surface, particularly in the treatment of water and reflected light. The palette is warm and restrained, dominated by chalky whites, sun-washed ochres, and silvery blues, conveying the distinctive luminosity of the Dalmatian coast. Small figures along the quay animate the scene, lending scale and quiet narrative without disturbing the overall sense of calm and permanence. This work retains its original vintage gilt frame, entirely appropriate to the period and enhancing the painting’s Mediterranean warmth. The artist’s label and inscription on the reverse provide strong documentary confirmation of both authorship and subject. A refined and highly decorative coastal view, appealing to collectors of British continental painting, Adriatic subjects, and early 20th-century travel imagery.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
