About the Item

This gently composed scene by Arthur Geissler presents a tranquil stretch of grassland extending toward the viewer, with a tall church-like building placed to the right of the picture plane and softly receding hills or open sky beyond. The broad expanse of green in the foreground invites the eye, while the architectural form anchors the right side, providing balance and a sense of quiet habitation in the landscape. Geissler’s subtle handling of light gives the grass a warm glow, and the building is rendered with clarity of form yet integrated into the natural setting rather than dominating it. The palette remains fresh but restrained—soft greens, gentle earth-tones, and cool sky hues—emphasising the calm of the scene rather than dramatic contrast. About the Artist Arthur Geissler (German, 1887–1963) was a German painter and graphic artist whose work is chiefly associated with landscapes created in the early to mid-20th century. According to available records, he was born in Erfurt and died in Dresden. He studied at the Applied Arts School in Weimar (1906-1909) and simultaneously took painting lessons at the Dresden Academy. Technical Style Geissler’s early work shows the influence of his teacher Ferdinand Dorsch, leaning toward Impressionist-inflected landscape painting. His brushwork is measured and calm, his compositions often serene rather than monumental. In his landscapes of the 1920s-1930s he shifted toward brighter colouration and a more modernist sensibility—more luminous greens, clearer skies, and simplified forms—while retaining strong structuring of land and architecture. His landscapes characteristically balance broad open spaces with architectural or natural singularities (such as a church tower or solitary tree) to lend the scene a quiet human presence. In the example above, the combination of an open grassland with a solitary built form on the right reflects his interest in the interplay of nature and structure, and his mature style’s emphasis on clarity of light, moderate colour intensity and compositional calm.
