About the Item

A Golden Dawn on the Maas In this refined marine painting, Arthur Joseph Meadows captures a tranquil sunrise on the river Maas just below the historic city of Dordrecht (“Dort”). The rising sun spreads a golden expanse of sky and water over the scene, suffusing the early morning atmosphere with a luminous glow. A cluster of sailing vessels and local boats drifts calmly on the glassy river, their silhouettes gently animated by the first light of day. On the distant horizon, the ancient spires and rooftops of Dordrecht catch the dawn’s radiance, anchoring the composition in a sense of place and history. The foreground suggests quiet harbor activity: figures tend to boats and cargo in the cool morning air, beginning the day’s work with unhurried rhythm. Meadows’ brushwork and delicate handling of light evoke a peaceful realism – the sky’s warm hues and the river’s mirrored reflections create an almost poetic serenity. This harmonious scene not only celebrates the daily life of a Dutch waterway at dawn, but also harkens back to the great Dutch Golden Age images of Dordrecht bathed in morning light, recalling Aelbert Cuyp’s masterful evocations of sunrise over the Maas. The overall impression is one of elegant calm and luminous atmosphere, inviting the viewer into a moment when nature and commerce meet in gentle balance at daybreak. The Artist’s Vision and Context Arthur Joseph Meadows (1843–1907) was a distinguished British marine painter renowned for his atmospheric seascapes and harbor scenes. A leading member of a prolific family of artists, Meadows was trained by his father, the painter James Meadows Sr., and from a young age he traveled widely in search of picturesque coastal vistas. He painted harbors and rivers across England, France, Holland, and even the Mediterranean, displaying a technical appreciation for accurate coastal views instilled in him by his upbringing. Critically influenced by the famed marine artist Clarkson Stanfield in matters of composition and drama, Meadows nonetheless developed his own signature style marked by a soft, subtle palette and keen eye for local detail. He excelled at capturing the nuances of light and weather – here evident in the pearly clouds and gentle haze of sunrise – which lend emotional depth and “peaceful realism” to his work. By the 1880s, when The Maas below Dort – Sunrise was painted, Meadows was at the height of his powers. He exhibited regularly in London; he showed works at the Royal Academy (1863–1872) and at the British Institution in the 1860s, earning recognition for his evocative maritime subjects. Victorian collectors admired his paintings for their scenic grandeur and atmospheric nuance, and Meadows enjoyed great success in his lifetime, selling widely to private patrons. Indeed, he is “considered the best of the Meadows family of marine artists,” celebrated for seascapes that combine accurate rendering with poetic ambiance. The Maas below Dort – Sunrise perfectly illustrates why Arthur Joseph Meadows remains popular among discerning collectors: it is rich in painterly atmosphere, faithfully yet artfully depicting a serene moment of 19th-century harbor life. The painting’s subject—an idyllic Dutch river scene at dawn—also reflects the artist’s international range and feeds the timeless appeal of maritime art, where natural light and human activity meet on tranquil waters. oil on canvas signed and dated lower right title and signature inscribed on reverse unframed: 25.5 x 36 cm (10 x 14 ⅛ in) framed: 41 x 52 cm (16 ⅛ x 20 ½ in) Provenance: A Swedish private collection. Halmstad Harbour Seen From the North, 1889
Located in Stockholm, SE
The painting "Halmstad Harbour Seen From the North" by Oscar Ohlson is a captivating snapshot of daily life and historical architecture, frozen in time from the year 1889. With a meticulous eye for detail, Ohlson has rendered approximately 25 boats in the harbor, each brimming with the quiet bustle of daily chores. The painting invites viewers to step into a moment where people converse, work, and seek respite from the sun under shared umbrellas, while wisps of smoke subtly rise from several boats, suggesting the presence of life and activity beyond the canvas. In this vibrant scene, a man carries a sack, perhaps fresh merchandise from one of the docked vessels, while others engage in conversation, highlighting the social tapestry of the harbor. Ohlson's masterful use of light reflects on the water, creating a shimmering path that leads the eye to the majestic Halmstad Castle, which adorns the right side of the painting. This historic building, beautifully situated by the Nissan river and not far from the sea, is a testament to Halmstad's past as a Danish territory. Constructed in the early 17th century during the reign of King Christian IV, the castle stands as a reminder of the town's rich history and cultural heritage. The first building to the right, once part of this historic tableau, has been removed to accommodate modern necessities, replaced by a road that now runs through its former site. This juxtaposition of past and present is a poignant commentary on the evolution of cities and the sacrifices made in the name of progress. Halmstad itself, a town that straddles the Nissan river, retains much of its early 20th-century character in its city core. Low brick and half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 17th century, dot the landscape. The town center on the west side of Nissan is bordered by remnants of early 17th-century fortifications, including the 1600s castle, Norre Port from 1601, and King Charles XI's path along the old fortress wall. At the heart of the town is Stora Torg with Carl Milles' Europa and the Bull fountain from 1926, and the town hall built in 1938. The city layout, influenced by Renaissance planning, converges at Stora Torg, which is also home to the town's sole medieval building, the brick hall church of St. Nikolai from the 14th century. Oscar Ohlson (1847-1912), a native of Linneryd, Småland, was a multifaceted individual. Beginning his career with a legal degree from Uppsala University in 1870, Ohlson's passion for the arts led him to pursue music studies before dedicating himself to art under the guidance of Alfred Wahlberg...

After Sunset by the Lake, 1889 by Swedish Artist Anton Genberg, 1889
Located in Stockholm, SE
Among the treasured classic arts we offer for sale is this stunning painting by the artist Anton Genberg. Born in 1862 to Pehr Jonsson and Anna Genberg, he left an indelible mark on the art world through his magnificent creations. Genberg's life was colored with a passion for exploration, study, and artistic expression. His artistic journey began with studies at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1882 to 1884, during which he also honed his skills at Oscar Törnås' private painting school. He furthered his education under the tutelage of Per Daniel Holm at the prestigious Konstakademien from 1884 to 1889. During these years, Genberg's exceptional talent was recognized with numerous scholarships and medals. Our painting, dated 1889, transports us to a captivating scene just some minutes after sunset. The canvas is imbued with a beautiful golden glow as the sun's last rays kiss the sky. Amidst a serene lake, the heavenly light reflects, painting the water's surface with mesmerizing shades of purple. In the distance, the landscape is dominated by a mountainous forest, while in the foreground, a stretch of land adorned with bushes creates a sense of depth. The impressionist style comes alive through Genberg's swift brushstrokes, reminiscent of the masterful techniques employed by Rembrandt, with branches delicately etched using the opposite end of the brush. Genberg's fame as a landscape artist was solidified through his enchanting depictions of snow-laden landscapes from Norrland, particularly the majestic "fjällen" (mountains). His art also captured the allure of Stockholm, Dalarna, and his birthplace in Jämtland. Notably, his masterpiece "Vinterafton" earned him a place of honor at the esteemed Nationalmuseum. Beyond his creative pursuits, Anton Genberg was actively involved in the art community. He served as the vice-chairman of the Svenska konstnärernas förening from 1913 to 1918 and held a position on the board of Sveriges allmänna konstförening from 1906 to 1939. His exceptional contributions were recognized when he was elected as a member of the Konstakademien in 1922. Throughout his life, Genberg resided in various places, leaving behind a trail of artistic inspiration. From 1916 to 1924, he lived in the enchanting Villa Wallbeck-Hansen, a masterpiece of national romanticism...
