About the Item

1920 Honolulu Harbor from Hillside by Arthur Merton Hazard. A luminous early 20th-century watercolor by Arthur Hazard (American, 1872-1930) depicting a sweeping hillside view over Honolulu Harbor. The composition captures low-rise commercial buildings descending toward the water, with anchored steamships beyond, rendered in a soft, sun-washed palette of blues, ochres, and greens. Architectural details and harbor activity reflect Honolulu’s emergence as a major Pacific port during this period. The work is inscribed on the verso “Hawaii from hillside,” supporting the Hawaiian location. Executed with confident brushwork and atmospheric light, the painting exemplifies the plein-air travel watercolors produced by American artists working in the Pacific in the early decades of the 20th century. Medium: Watercolor on paper Artist: Arthur Merton Hazard (1872-1930) Signed and dated: "A. M. Hazard 1920" lower right corner. Most of his career was spent in Boston where he was principal of the School of Painting in 1904-17. For health reasons, he moved to Los Angeles in 1923. Hazard was active in the local art scene and painted many portraits of prominent Los Angeles residents including Charles M. Russell, Douglas Fairbanks, and Jack Wilkinson Smith. He also painted landscapes and coastal scenes. While vacationing in France, he died near Paris on Dec. 26, 1930.
