About the Item
Arvid Mauritz Lindström (1849–1923) – Fall Landscape
The painting presents a vast autumn landscape illuminated by the soft glow of a setting sun. At the center, a stream winds its way toward the horizon, its clear waters carrying golden-yellow leaves shed by the richly colored autumn trees along its banks. The scene is rendered with atmospheric sensitivity, combining natural detail with a romantic vision of nature’s grandeur. The work is signed by the artist and probably executed during the end of the 19th century. Oil on canvas and still with its original gilded frame.
Arvid Mauritz Lindström was born in Sundsvall, Sweden, 1849 and died in 1923. He is recognized as one of the formost Swedish landscape painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often celebrated for his depictions of northern landscapes, forests, and atmospheric light effects. His work is firmly rooted in the Scandinavian landscape tradition, yet also reflects broader European influences.
Lindström studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1869 and 1872. He later continued his education abroad, including a period at the Academy in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he absorbed the stylistic tendencies of the Düsseldorf School, particularly its focus on naturalistic yet poetic landscape representation.
In addition to his studies in Düsseldorf, Lindström traveled in France and Italy, where he encountered different approaches to landscape painting and gained exposure to international artistic circles. These experiences enriched his palette and broadened his artistic perspective.
Lindström was active both in Sweden and abroad. He became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1891. His works were frequently exhibited in Stockholm and at other venues in Sweden during his lifetime. He also showed work in international exhibitions, including in Berlin, Paris, and London, where Scandinavian landscape painting was increasingly admired by collectors and critics.
Paintings by Lindström are represented in several public collections, including:
