About the Item
This is a wonderful antique American landscape featuring a natural stone formation. It certainly looks like it may have been a natural bridge at one time, but perhaps it was the remains of one. The style is very much of the Hudson River School and the location points to the Hudson River area of Upstate New York, perhaps around the Kaaterskill Falls area - a popular site for artists of the time to paint. Adding to the interest of the scene are the visitors or tourists enjoying the site from a man made stair and viewing platform secured to the side of a rock formation. A stream bursts through the site, with an arc-ing natural stone formation on one side and a complimentary formation on the other. The colors are bright and detailing of the trees, stream and structure fairly exact.
The painting is signed lower right and is by Boston-born artist Asa Coolidge Warren. He was born in 1819 and was the son of 18th century portrait painter Asa Warren. The younger Warren began working as an engraver and for a while an engraver of banknote vignettes and illustrations. During the Civil War, he moved to New York City. Around 1880 he located to Washington DC. and worked for the Government Printing Office. His paintings are considered to be rare. Warren died in 1904.
This painting is oil on canvas and measures 18” x 24”. Sometime in the past it was relined. It presents well, with no condition issues to report other than typical minor age related ones. It is housed in a period 19th century gilded frame that seems to suit it nicely. The frame is also in very good condition with, likewise, only minor age related issues here and there. The overall framed dimensions are just over 25” x 30”.
This exact painting was featured in “The Artists of Washington, D.C. 1796-1996” by Virgil E. McMahan under the listing for Asa Coolidge Warren, as he lived in Washington during the later years of his life. (See the last image). It is titled as being “At the Base of Natural Bridge, Virginia”, but I do not believe that attribution is correct. The Natural Bridge Virginia landmark is a full arched formation and different in appearance. Whether or not is the Virginia landmark or further north in New York, this is a beautiful example of later 19th century American landscape painting.

View AllRare Southern Painting of the French Broad River, North Carolina ca 1890
Located in Baltimore, MD
This is an unsigned, but rare, late 19th century oil on canvas of a view of the French Broad River in North Carolina. It is amongst the world’s oldest rivers. The scene depicted is mountainous and the water is swiftly moving. This would put the location at the northern end of its course, north of Asheville and near the North Carolina and Tennessee border.

Historical Southern Painting - North Carolina Homestead - Belcross, Camden Co.
Located in Baltimore, MD
If you have interest in Eastern North Carolina Tidewater history and architecture, this painting may be a fine addition to your home or collection. It is an oil on board of the Sanderlin House in Belcross, Camden County. There is quite a bit of history written on a card on the back board that describes the family members of the house in the late 19th century.
Camden is the courthouse town for Camden County. It is a small town located on the east side of the Pasquotank River, a few miles from Elizabeth City. Belcross is an area just outside of town. Apparently two near-identical houses were built ca 1840’s by the Sanderlin brothers, William and Joseph. One was left to ruin and disappeared, the other seems to possibly remain. In any event, per the information included, this is a view of the house by artist Miss Ella Bidgood, ca 1895. An Ella Bidgood, born in Baltimore in 1855, has been identified and she was a resident of Norfolk, Virginia with her family in the 1900 census. She is likely the artist of this painting. It is painted in a somewhat naive style but competently shows details of the house in nice, vivid colors. The painting is not signed but the information on the back side seems completely reliable.
The painting itself is oil on board and measures 12” x 18”. It has been recently cleaned and varnished. It is in very good condition with no issues to report. It is housed in a substantial gold painted frame of the period with interesting detailing. Overall framed measurements are 19” x 24”. The frame is in good solid condition with no issues to report, other than expected very minor age-related wear. Note that the photos show some glare from the varnish in places that really doesn’t show in general light.

Hudson Highlands by Lockwood DeForest (American, 1850-1932)
Located in New York, NY
"Hudson Highlands," by Hudson River School painter Lockwood DeForest (American, 1850-1932) is oil on artists card-stock and measures 9.5 x 14 inches. The work is framed in an elegant, period appropriate frame, and ready to hang.
Lockwood de Forest was born in New York in 1850 to a prominent family. He grew up in Greenwich Village and on Long Island at the family summer estate in Cold Spring Harbor. As was customary for a cultivated family in the Gilded Age, the de Forests made frequent trips abroad. Excursions to the great museums, which were prominent on the de Forests agenda, deepened the young Lockwood's familiarity with European painting and sculpture. Though he had begun drawing and painting somewhat earlier, it was during a visit to Rome in 1868 that nineteen-year-old de Forest first began to study art seriously, taking painting lessons from the Italian landscapist Hermann David Salomon Corrodi (1844–1905). More importantly, on the same trip, Lockwood met one of America’s most celebrated painters, (and his maternal great-
uncle by marriage) Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), who quickly became his mentor. DeForest accompanied Church on sketching trips around Italy and continued this practice when they both returned to America in 1869. Early on in his career, de Forest made a habit of recording the date and often the place of his oil sketches, as to create a visual diary of his travels. Lockwood’s profession as a landscape painter can be primarily attributed to Frederic E. Church and his belief in the young artist’s talent.
De Forest often visited Church in the Hudson River community of Catskill where, in addition to sketching trips and afternoons of painting, he assisted with the architectural drawings and planning of Olana. In 1872, de Forest took a studio at the Tenth Street Studio Building in New York. During these formative years de Forest counted among his friend’s artists such as Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–80), George Henry Yewell (1830–1923), John Frederick Kensett (1816–72), Jervis McEntee (1828–91), and Walter Launt Palmer (1854–1932).
Over the next decade de Forest experienced success as a painter. He exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design in 1872, and made two more painting trips abroad, in 1875–76 and 1877–78, traveling to the major continental capitals but also the Middle East and North Africa. His trip to the Middle East and the library at Church’s home, Olana, established his interest in design during his mid-twenties. From about 1878 to 1902, landscape painting was overshadowed by his activities and preoccupation with East Indian architecture and décor, a style that became quite fashionable in late nineteenth century America. From 1879-1883, de Forest founded Associated Artists along with Louis Comfort Tiffany, Candace Wheeler...
