About the Item

We are thrilled to have acquired this fine mid 19th Century oil, attributed to the genre scene painter Henry Adams (1794-1868). The scene shows an elegantly dressed couple, the woman in a flowing white dress and the man in britches and a rust coloured , velvet jacket and a jauntily angled hat. This particular couple are a direct reference to Jean Antoine Watteau's paintings as these two characters appeared in several of his works. The fountain too is a nod to the garden scenes of Watteau. Although inspired by Watteau's fêtes galantes, this painting is not a direct copy of any one of his works. Adam's signature cavalier Spaniel jumps up at the couples feet and another couple can been seen strolling under an arch in the background. The painting is unsigned. The painting has been presented in its original Louis XV style frame. A particularity beautiful artifact in its own right, this gilt frame has swept and pierced corners and rails with built up acanthus leaf ornamentation. Many frame makers of this period were influenced greatly by Jean Antoine Watteau, this may be why this frame so suits its painting. On wood panel.

British female artist, attributed to Margaret Sarah Carpenter, nee Geddes, painted this lovely 19th century portrait oil painting. Painted circa 1840 it is a three quarter length portrait of a two sisters in a landscape. The colours are still vibrant and the detail lovely. Carpenter mostly painted portraits in the manner of Thomas Lawrence and his influence can be seen here in the composition and detail. A lovely Victorian portrait oil painting by a female artist who was much sought after as a portraitist in London and she was also a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy. When purchased this painting was of a single sitter. However when this stunning painting was professionally cleaned it revealed the second younger sister. Provenance.
