About the Item

Augustus Daggy was born in Paris, Illinois and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where his work was later exhibited in annual shows from 1879 to 1887. Daggy was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In the mid 1890s, Daggy travelled to Europe and painted at least once at Concarneau, a town in Brittany near the artist's colony in Pont Aven. After returning to the United States, he continued to paint landscapes along the East Coast, including several in the artist's colony at Silvermine in Connecticut. He favored an atmospheric, impressionistic style characterized by spontaneous brushwork and soft-edged swathes of color. Daggy's work has been mentioned in Harper's Bazaar and Life Magazine. The painting itself measures 11" x 14 7/8". Artist's name written on back of panel.
