About the Item
Victorian Impressionist Large Signed Landscape Framed Oil Painting on canvas laid on stretchers of Lake District England.
This lovely painting was produced by the Whitby artist Augustus William Enness RBA 1876 - 1946.
A much admired and widely exhibited artist who specialised in Landscape paintings and worked on the Continent as well as painting in the South East and the Lake District. Enness studied at the Slade School of Art and the Academie Julian in Paris. His work was exhibited at the Salon Paris, The Royal Academy, Royal Institute of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and the Walker Art Gallery. His main outlet appears to be the Fine Art Society where he featured in no less than 67 exhibitions. He was elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1925.
His work shows the change in style between the late Victorian period and the British Post Impressionist movement. His paintings latterly very much showcased the effects of light upon the Landscape. This "tour de force" is suffused in soft hazy sunlight and shows strong shadows and sun clipped highlights. It totally evokes the majesty of the Lakes on a sunny day.
