About the Item

Couples morning stroll in a woodland park is a beautiful painting by the Danish artist Axel Thorsen Schovelin (1827-1893) The painting is called "Parti af Sorgenfri. Formiddagsstemning" English: "From Sorgenfri", "Morning mood" Oil on paper laid on canvas. Signed a tergo “A. Schovelin” and inscribed: “Parti af Sorgenfri. Formiddagsstemning”. Set in gilt wood frame from the period. The upper part of the painting has a bronze painted arch which creates an illusion of looking out of an arched window or opening. Possibly the present painting is a sketch for a larger painting meant for a interior room setting. An elegant couple is shown taking a morning walk through the wooded parkland of the Royal Sorgenfri Palace Garden. The soft haze of early daylight is beginning to lift, revealing patches of blue sky as the sun breaks through the crowns of the beech trees, casting delicate shafts of light across the forest path. Painted en plein air, during the latter half of the 19th century, the composition captures both the intimacy of the figures and the atmospheric qualities of the Danish landscape that Schovelin so often sought to convey. Axel Thorsen Schovelin was born in 1827 in Copenhagen and died in 1893 in Frederiksberg, Denmark. He showed artistic talent early in life and, at the age of 12, was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, one of the youngest students to do so At the Academy, he was a pupil of the Romantic painter Johan Ludwig Lund. Schovelin debuted in 1848 at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. In the following years, he presented numerous landscapes from Zealand. Supported by the Academy, Schovelin traveled to Germany and France around 1857, though this trip produced mainly sketches with limited impact. A more significant journey occurred in 1866 when, commissioned by King Christian IX, he created studies for a larger painting titled Heidelberg Castle Ruins, exhibited in 1867 alongside Drachenfels on the Rhine—works regarded as among his finest. Schovelin was a prolific painter of landscapes, mostly within a few miles of Copenhagen, featuring local forests, coastal views, and scenes from areas like Dyrehaven (The Deer Park). He published a notable collection of etchings, Strange Old Danish Trees, focusing especially on oak and beech — unique for their in-depth depiction of tree forms. He exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg for nearly 45 years, from his debut in 1848 and onward. Schovelins style blends Romanticism and Realism, distinguished by his sensitive, poetic portrayals of nature. His skill in composition and color, particularly in his younger works, won him significant popularity. Sorgenfri Palace and Its Gardens Sorgenfri Palace (Sorgenfri Slot) is a royal residence in Kongens Lyngby, north of Copenhagen. Originally constructed in 1756–57 under architect Lauritz de Thurah, it replaced an earlier Baroque structure from 1705 The palace stands in a 40-hectare garden, originally Baroque, later transformed between 1791 and 1794 into an English Romantic landscape, featuring winding paths, gazebos, and pavilions like the Swiss House and Norwegian House, designed by Nicolai Abildgaard The garden includes remnants of its previous formal layout, like the lime tree-lined axial approach, harmoniously integrated with more romantic elements, such as serene lakes and shaded vistas. The estate has served as a summer residence for various royals, including Christian X, and the park remains open to the public

Figures and Cattle on Woodland Path - French figurative landscape oil painting
By Philippe Budelot
Located in Hagley, England
This charming French Old Master oil painting is by noted French artist Philippe Budelot. Painted circa 1800 the composition is of figures on a woodland path by a lake. In the foreground is a drover on horseback with some cattle and a goat. They are being greeted by the sheep dog of the shepherdess behind them who has sheep scattered amongst the trees. More figures are coming along the path in the distance. The group in the foreground are well illuminated beneath the blue sky above and it is probably early morning. The brushwork on the trees is superb and the whole scene is quite charming. This is an excellent example of a French Old Master landscape...
