About the Item
Large early 20th Century Dutch oil on canvas genre river view by C van der Maas. The painting is signed bottom left and is presented in a patinated gilt and 'bronzed' frame with a white slip.
Provenance: Acquired from Christies London and thence by descent.
A charming view of houseboats moored on a river canal. Maas has captured all the details of the scene, the bright white paint , green and red details and high metal smoke stacks. To the side a pair of rowing boats or skiffs are tied up against the current of the river which flows languidly by. As is so reminiscent of the Dutch landscape sky and water meld together at the horizon. The surrounding landscape has been captured by Maas in a more quick and fluid Impressionist style and he has reserved all his skill and mastery for the fine details of the boats. The contrast gives a wonderful sense of calm to the composition of the paining.
