10/02/2023, 16.20 h is a unique oil on canvas painting by Spanish contemporary artist Calo Carratalá, dimensions are 230 × 496 cm (90.6 × 195.3 in). The painting is composed of two panels, both measuring 230 x 248 cm (90.6 × 97.6 in). The painting can be sold mounted on wood chassis or unmounted (rolled canvas). The artwork is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
In this series, the artist portrays the landscapes of a historic and naturally rich region of Senegal, located in the country’s south along the Casamance River. The title of the artwork refers to the exact moment captured by Calo Carratalá during his journey through the African landscape.
The piece was featured in the artist’s solo exhibition “No hay espacio, todo es tiempo. África en la memoria”, held at the La Nau Cultural Centre of the University of Valencia, Spain, in 2024. The exhibition presented works ranging from very small to monumental formats, encouraging viewers to engage both intimately and physically with the space. Several paintings were created specifically for the cloister and the Sala Oberta, adapting to the site’s architectural beauty. Carratalá’s work expresses a profound attachment to nature and invites reflection on ecological awareness and our relationship to the world we inhabit.

Deeply passionate about travel, Carratalá paints the landscapes that move him most profoundly. His series of figurative paintings pay homage to the magnificent sceneries of the Amazon, Tanzania, and Norway. Without overtly declaring it, the artist questions humanity’s relationship with nature and the ambivalent emotions it provokes—between fear and fascination. His work has been exhibited widely across European galleries and public institutions, and he has received several prestigious first prizes since the early 1990s.

Calo Carratalá
Artist Calo Carratalá takes a contemporary view of nature in his stirring large-format drawings and landscape paintings. He maintains that we don't view it the way we once did and, in contrast to the way that Renaissance painters saw landscapes as depictions of places that had yet to be discovered, Carratalá sees the natural world as something to be protected and not merely admired.
From his snow-topped cabins hidden deep in the woods to sunlit tropical beaches, Carratalá’s scenes are wholly inviting for viewers. Each of his paintings reflects the majesty of nature and gives us a sense of its innate significance.
Carratalá was born and raised in Spain and began painting when he was very young. In 1980, he began his art studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia and finished his studies in 2000 at the Spanish Academy in Rome.
Carratalá made a name for himself in the art world over the subsequent few years, securing many commissions and showing in numerous galleries around Spain and greater Europe. In 2010, he received a request from the city of Alicante in his native country to show his work at a metro station. In 2019, he exhibited his art at Museo del Ruso in Alarcón.
