About the Item
An oil painting of a street in Sag Harbor, NY. A simple, modest scene set in the Fabulous Hamptons. This section of Division street is where a number of local churches are based and holds a lot of history. Bretzke paints the historic colonial architecture alongside more contemporary innovations likes electrical wires and modern street signs and lights. An oncoming car's headlights blast the viewer with a bright white light and casts glare upon the atmosphere of nighttime.
Framed in a simple 3-inch black stock frame with gold lip.

American realist painter Carl Bretzke is particularly adept at nocturne scenes which ooze in darkness, reminiscent of Edward Hopper. Bretzke remarks: “What most people don’t notice is, as the light drops off, the color of light changes. You must see WHERE the color changes and where the light is coming from.” In "Division Street at Night," Bretzke illustrates several light sources. The brightest being a pair of oncoming headlights—two glaring white orbs which cast luminous beams up to the dark sky and reflect against the road. This stream of white light allows the viewer to see the rich blue within the blackened night sky. Streetlamps adorn the perimeter of the road which radiate spheres in a burnt yellow-orange hue. An ornamented flowerpot adorns a triangular isle of grass, backlit by another pair of headlights, and a bright storefront window.
Bretzke’s work exudes a cinematic quality that evokes a more positive and connected iteration of Edward Hopper’s deep dive into the American experience.

Carl Bretzke is a representational painter who specializes in urban scenes and plein-air landscapes. Carl's work has been exhibited extensively in Minnesota and California, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Carl's work has been described in the Washington Post as "simultaneously intimate and detached…The artist's unadorned style recalls Edward Hopper and The Ashcan school."
Carl holds an MD degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Colorado, where he also received a minor in Fine Art. Carl has also trained extensively under Plein Air Painters of America signature artist Joseph Paquet.
