About the Item

Carl Frederik Aagaard, Sunset over Dyrehaven. Signed C.F. Aagaard. Oil on canvas laid on card box panel. 22×32 cm without frame. A tergo written: "Prof C F Aagaard Sonedgang Jægersborg Dyrehave 1860" and "til højre for døren", the last text meaning "to the right of the door" and possibly meaning a placement in a room. Probably painted "en plein air". which comes from the French and means the act of painting outdoors. Dyrehaven or Jægersborg Dyrehave is a large nature park in Lyngby-Taarbæk just north of Copenhagen next to the sea. The history of the park goes back to 1669 when Fredrik III fenced off a large piece of land to create a hunting ground and it was later expanded further by his son King Christian V. A painting depicting Jægersborg Dyrehave in daylight by Aagaard is in Statens Museum for Kunst (National Museum of Denmark). Carl Frederik Aagaard (1833-1895) was a Danish landscape painter. Aagaard, started his painting studies in Odense but for better studies and possibilities he went to Copenhagen in 1852. With decorative painter Georg Hilker he practiced decoration painting while at the same time attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Although he soon turned to landscape painting under P.C. Skovgaard's guidance and made this his main subject, he has, however, not only in his younger years, but also later executed considerable decorations of importance. As a landscape painter, he began exhibiting in 1857 with Free-growing Field Flowers, which had won the Neuhausen Prize. In 1865 he received the Sødringske Opmuntringsprize for a large landscape, Afternoon Morning in Dyrehaven, which was bought for the Danish Royal Painting Collection. In 1870-71 and 1875-76 he was on longer trips abroad, both times to Italy. In the time between the two trips, he had in 1874 become a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He was appointed professor in 1892 and Knight of the Dannebrog in 1879.
