About the Item

Signed lower left. This painting was exhibited at the James Cox Gallery, Woodstock NY. "Carl Olof Eric Lindin 1862-1942", in 1993. No. 27. Carl Lindin, a Swedish-born painter who became a central figure in the Woodstock art colony, was celebrated for his ability to fuse tonal subtlety with a deep reverence for landscape. Ojai Moon exemplifies his lyrical approach to nature, capturing the quiet majesty of the California valley at twilight. The composition unfolds in layered bands of earth and sky: rolling hills in warm ochres and greens anchor the foreground, where two red‑toned horses graze in tranquil solitude. Beyond, clusters of trees lead the eye toward a distant range of violet and blue mountains, their forms softened by atmospheric haze. Above, a crescent moon rises in a sky that shifts from verdant green near the horizon to deep indigo at the zenith, evoking the hushed transition between day and night. Lindin’s brushwork is both restrained and expressive, balancing naturalistic detail with a painterly handling of light. The rustic wooden frame complements the work’s organic sensibility, reinforcing its connection to place and time. The painting reflects Lindin’s dual identity as both a European‑trained artist and an interpreter of American landscapes, situating Ojai Moon within the broader dialogue of early 20th‑century regionalism. - Training Influences: Lindin studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under Benjamin Constant and Jean‑Paul Laurens, absorbing a European academic foundation before moving to the U.S.. His tonal handling of atmosphere reflects this training, but his subject matter—American valleys, mountains, and twilight skies—places him firmly in the lineage of American landscape painting. - Woodstock Byrdcliffe: Lindin was a founding member of the Byrdcliffe art colony, which evolved into the Woodstock Artists Association. His role there situates him among artists who sought to merge fine art with craft, community, and regional identity. - Auction Market Scholarship: Lindin’s works have appeared at auction with realized prices range up to $32,400, showing both modest and high demand depending on subject and scale. His atmospheric landscapes, especially moonlit scenes, are among the more valued works. - Comparative Works: Paintings like Moonlight (dated 1915) and The Cloud (sold in 2005) demonstrate Lindin’s recurring interest in twilight and celestial motifs. Ojai Moon belongs to this continuum, emphasizing his fascination with transitional light.

Rooted Silence
By Paul Grimm
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A painting by Paul Grimm. "Rooted Silence" is a landscape painting, oil on board in an earth-tone palette by artist Paul Grimm. It is signed in the lower right, "Paul Grimm". Paul Grimm (1891-1974) was an artist born to German parents in South Africa in 1891. As a small child, he moved with his parents to the United States. He reportedly was seen as having artistic talent as a child and, as an adult, attended a university-level art school in New York. Between 1910 and 1920, he reportedly went to South America for a few years before returning stateside and settling in southern California. Grimm gained much of his present-day fame by painting landscapes of southern California in the 1920s. Many works depict alluvial fans and desert vegetation in the eastern half of Riverside County. The San Jacinto Mountains appear frequently in his work. Most of the works are oil on canvas. A residence on Calle Palo Fierro in the Palm Springs Warm Sands Neighborhood was built for him in 1935. He had a studio on Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs from the 1950s until his death in 1974. Provenance: with George Stern Fine Arts...
