About the Item
A nature flower study by Carl Luthander (1879-1967). Oil on canvas, signed “Luthander”. The fresh, direct rendition of the flowers suggests it was painted plein air, likely during the early years of the 20th century. The composition concentrates on the blossoms with the green vegetation as a background color. The brushwork is fresh, the palette luminous, and the spontaneous mood reflects Luthander’s interest in capturing nature in the moment.
Carl Fritiof Vaste Luthander was born in 1879 in Motala, Sweden and died died in 1967 in Stockholm.
He studied under the noted Swedish painter and museum-curator Richard Bergh and at the Valand Art School in Gothenburg. He also travelled for study in France, Italy and Spain, broadening his exposure to international artistic currents.
Luthander is known primarily for oil paintings and pastels of Swedish landscapes, especially views of Stockholm, the surrounding archipelago and the Mälaren region, with a shimmering, light filled atmosphere.
He made his debut exhibition in 1909 together with contemporaries such as Mollie Faustman, Gösta Törneqvist and Frans Timén.
His painting technique often shows impressionist influences (bright light, loose brushwork, atmospheric nuance) adapted to Swedish motifs.
Carl Luthander is represented in major Swedish collections and museums.
Luthander’s work reflects a bridging of Swedish landscape tradition with early 20th-century sensibility: by employing plein-air technique, he captures fleeting light and atmosphere, even in the modest motif of a flower study. His oeuvre offers fine examples of Swedish modern landscape and still-life painting, with an understated elegance and calm poise.
