About the Item

Carlota Rosales Martínez de Pedrosa was born in Madrid in 1872 and was the second daughter of the painter Eduardo Rosales, after the birth the Rosales family moved to Murcia, as the painter had been commissioned by the four evangelists who are currently preserved in the church of Santa Cruz in Atocha street in Madrid. Carlota did not get to know her father, he died of tuberculosis when the girl was barely one year old, but throughout her life she kept the memories of what the two people closest to him, her mother and her uncle Fernando Martínez de Pedrosa. The economic situation of the family was so difficult that on the death of the painter a public auction of some of the works had to be held, thus obtaining some money to be able to survive for some time. From a very young age, Carlota showed her hobby and ability to paint, she began in the world of art at the hands of her godfather, the also painter Vicente Palmaroli, a close friend of her father. In 1887, when she was fifteen years old, she won an extraordinary scholarship of two thousand pesetas a year to attend the Spanish Academy in Rome for two years, she traveled to Italy accompanied by her mother. Thus, Carlota Rosales, along with Inocencia Aragón, were the only two women retired from the aforementioned institution during the 19th century. During her stay at the Academy she met Miguel Santonja, professor of Harmony at the Madrid Conservatory, whom she married in 1896, at which point painting took a back seat in Carlota's life, she abandoned a promising pictorial career , on behalf of his family, but not before participating in some of the editions of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, such as in 1895, when he obtained an Honorable Mention. Carlota Rosales's paintings have their roots in the romantic tradition, possibly due to her family ancestry, her father is considered the quintessential romantic painter, and the same can be said of her main teacher, Vicente Palmaroli. His favorite genres include still life, portraiture and genre painting. In all of them a loose brushstroke predominates that configures solid shapes, looking above all for light effects. Melancholy and a brooding character is a common note in a good part of his portraits, mostly dedicated to female characters in his environment, perhaps for this reason highlighting the intimate character of many of the portraits. As far as genre painting is concerned, it followed the romantic tradition, it is oriented towards anecdotal scenes, such as church interiors at the time of holy offices or urban landscapes treated with great light intensity.

Technical Data Sheet Title: La Arboleda (Zaragoza) Artist: Juan Bayón Salado (Bay Sala) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 23.6 x 28.7 inches Condition: Unframed Period: Mid-20th century Style: Impressionism with Expressionist influences Description: This painting depicts a wooded riverside landscape, likely the Ebro River as it passes through Zaragoza. The open composition and vibrant natural light emphasize green and ochre tones, evoking an atmosphere of tranquility and connection with nature. The arrangement of trees in perspective guides the viewer's eye toward the horizon, where a red building provides contrast and balance to the scene. On the right, small human figures add dynamism and depth to the landscape. The loose brushstrokes and tonal transitions suggest an agile yet detailed execution.
