Exceptional oil on canvas by Spanish artist Carmelo García Barrena. It depicts a pleasant and picturesque scene of the Belgian city of Bruges, an urban corner with a stone bridge and typical houses reflected in the water. Carmelo García Barrena (Bilbao, 1926–2000)
Carmelo García Barrena was a Spanish painter of great importance for his varied subject matter (landscapes, figures, portraits, etc.) and his distinctive style, featuring a highly distinctive Impressionism, almost abstract still lifes, modeled with objects, geometric shapes, and glazes, influenced by Flemish masters, circus and festive scenes, and a profound mastery and knowledge of painting techniques.
Exiled as a child in Belgium during the Civil War, his artistic calling was born there, and he began his training at the School of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1946, he entered the Academy of the Vizcayan Artistic Association and, given the lack of artistic atmosphere in his hometown at the time, he decided, in 1952, to travel around Europe (Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Antwerp) and enrolled at the Koninklijke Akademia von Schoone, while also becoming acquainted with the European avant-garde movements.
His work has been seen in Bilbao, Seville, Alicante, Madrid, Zaragoza, Bayonne, London, Paris, Prague, Mexico City, and more. His work is held in important private collections and institutions such as the Bilbao Museum of Modern Art and the Camón Aznar Museum in Zaragoza. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid purchased two of his works in 1970.
