About the Item

A stunning oil painting depicting figures by the Lakeside in the 20th Century. Carol Hopkins was known for her charming intimate figurative scenes portraying life in the North East. She was active, picking up her subjects from the beaches, parks, restaurants, cities, daily life, and much more. The artist achieves a beautiful rendition of the lakeside with sailboats passing along the water and figures enjoying the beautiful day. The puffed clouds in a blue sky is achieved wonderfully. This piece comes housed in a gold wood frame and signed lower right with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 20 x 24 inches Frame Measures 26 x 30.5 inches Carol Hopkins was born on August 1st, 1941. She grew up in DeRuyter and Cuyler New York, with her brother John and sister Pat, where her mother’s family originated. She also spent many summers in Johnstown, NY, where her father’s family was from. While growing up, Carol's high-spirited nature and love of family and friends were obvious. The family moved to Cortland as Carol entered her senior year. She then graduated from Cortland High School in 1959, going on to attend Cortland State University. Carol put her education and career plans on hold to raise her daughters. She worked over the years as a waitress and secretary at several local businesses, including the original Skyline Diner, her father’s electrical contracting company, SUNY Cortland, Cortland Free Library, and Cortland Nursing Home. Carol was a very talented artist. She pursued her love of art and drawing earlier in her life with charcoal and, later, with fine markers. In 1974, Carol and Leroy "Hop" Hopkins were married and lived in McGraw, where they owned the Car-O-Sal-Shoppe, selling “antiques” and also offering ceramics classes. Carol’s paintings are outgoing and vibrant, full of fun, bright, and light. Carol passed away in 2023 in New York. PROVENANCE: Estate of Private Collection Orland, FL; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.
