About the Item
California Sunset - The West Coast enjoys the luxury of the extravagant, dramatic sunsets in hues of vibrant oranges fading to pure yellow diminishing to lavender and traces of lime green. On the edge of nightfall, two beachgoers stand in silence as the sun disappears beyond the horizon while lighting up the dark clouds as it says a vibrant goodnight.
Artist Carole Garland captures the melancholy and sense of loss that accompany the close of day, at
the same time igniting the fleeting beauty and passionate majesty of the moment. Garland uses many
techniques, including impasto, scraping, dry brush and glazing to convey the emotions and drama of the California sunset.
This 30"x30" oil painting on wood panel is wired for ease of hanging. The two-inch deep wood panel
sides may serve as a frame.
Artist Carole Garland is in art collections throughout the United States and has been in shows all around Southern California. Most recently: DeFrenS Gallery, West Lake Village; Gallery of Hermosa, Hermosa Beach; Betsy Leuks Art Center, Burbank; Kathryne Designs, Montecito; Santa Paula Art Museum, Santa Paula; Topanga Art Gallery to name a few. She was in individual shows at TAG Gallery, Bergamot Station, Santa Monica.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy.
To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
