This piece was painted en plein air in Venice from the Punta della Dogana looking toward San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. I arrived before dawn to set up my easel and was rewarded with a incredible golden sunrise. I had to work quickly as the light was changing so fast but the church and buildings were lit from behind with a gorgeous orange glow that I really wanted to capture directly with paint. The oil colour was applied in an alla prima technique with final adjustments made back at base on location. Gabrielle ( Ella ) Moulding grew up in the idyllic countryside of the Cotswolds, studied in Scotland at Edinburgh University and worked in the Fine Arts industry in London. For 17 years she lived with her family around the world in France, South Africa, South Korea, Australia, Japan and the USA. She recently moved back to her hometown of Cheltenham. She has exhibited numerous times in Sydney, Tokyo, New York, New Jersey and London. Last year she was awarded the Gwen Mandley Memorial Award at the Chelsea Art Society. She has been selected for the Royal Institute of Oil Colour annual exhibition, the Royal Institute of Watercolours annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries and the Royal Watercolour Society exhibition, Bankside Gallery.
