About the Item

This beautiful large impressionist oil on canvas by French artist Charles Cermak was painted in the 1930's. The work depicts colourful sailing boats in a harbor on the Côte d'Azur, most likely close to Saint-Tropez, where the artist lived and worked. Cermak has employed small and thick impasto brushwork to build up the colours of the boats and fishermen, and then looser strokes to build an impression of the sky and sea. A truly evocative depiction of Southeastern France. This leading example of the artist's work is in excellent original condition and is presented in a beautiful swept frame. Signed lower left. Artist: Charles Cermak (French, 1877-1966) Title: Côte d'Azur Harbor Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 26 x 31.5 inches (66 x 80 cm) including the frame Charles Cermak was born in Czechoslovakia in 1899, naturalized French in October 1930. He can be considered one of the purest interpreters of the landscapes of Provence and the Côte d'Azur, particularly the small port of Saint-Tropez (Var), where he took up residence. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1929 to 1931.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
