About the Item

Romantic Mountain Landscape with Waterfall - Turn of the Century Oil Painting Vibrant painting of an alpine landscape, likely inspired by the American West by Charles Christian Eisele (American, German b. 1854 d. 1919.) A waterfall flows over two low cliffs into a vibrantly colored teal lake. Along the lake shore are a variety of trees and other foliage. Rows of evergreens are present, adding to the alpine feel. A trio of smaller trees are clustered by the shore, with their leaves turning orange, hinting at the fall season. In the distance snowy mountains fade into the atmospheric sky, where the sun glints orange on the clouds. Areas such as the sky and mountains are rendered with more atmospheric and soft brushstrokes, while other areas such as the cliffs are done with thick brush strokes, providing the piece with a more impressionistic flair. Signed in bottom left "C. Eisele." Canvas size: 19.88" H x 23.88" W Frame size: 23.5" H x 27.5" W Charles Christian Eisele was born in Essling, Germany in 1854 and he immigrated to the United States in 1869. After moving to the United States, he was active as a landscape painter across the West Coast, in states such as Oregon, Utah, and Colorado. His work was particularly appreciated in Utah and in 1893 he was commissioned by the World's Fair Commission of Utah to create a large scale painting of Salt Lake City, to be displayed in Chicago. Eisele was also known for his panoramic paintings which combined city and landscape. He passed away in Oregon City in 1919. The often spiritual nature of his work has earned him recognition in modern academic works on the Mormon faith, signaling the value of his contribution to the Midwest’s cultural and spiritual history. Information on Eisele is contained in the Utah Artists Project at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah. Although he found his inspiration primarily in small mountain communities of the North and Midwest, Eisele also produced a number of signed works depicting native Florida riverine landscapes with watercraft and human figures in the late 1880s. By the time he produced Moonlight on the Oklawaha, the distinctive north-flowing offshoot of the St. Johns River was already a bustling highway for commerce and sightseeing tourists who investigated the mysterious Ocklawaha basin from the decks of busy steamboats.
