About the Item
Charles Glize was an artist active in the Provence region of France, specifically the countryside in and around Marseille. He has a diverse oeuvre ranging from the highly formal — paintings of Cupid and fancifully-dressed women — to subtle depictions of rural life and landscape. "Edge of the Barbizon" falls somewhere in between. The bathers might be village girls washing off the dust of the road, or a group of frolicking nymphs. Both are possible in Glize's vision of the French countryside.
The painting itself measures 17" x 27 1/2". Artist's signature is lower right.
